Hello! I am Sara, owner of Terra Shepherd Boutique & Apothecary, based in Sioux Falls, SD.
Terra Shepherd evolved from a belief that consumers deserve to expect more from the products they purchase, including fair wages and safe working conditions for the individuals who create these products, sustainable production practices, and products made without harmful chemicals. We should not have to sacrifice style to honor these values.
I love the world of fashion and retail, but I believe we can and must do better.
The world of ethical and sustainable goods can be difficult to navigate. My goal is to take some of the legwork out of finding beautiful products that align with your values.
I have taken many things into consideration in the selection of our product assortment: sustainability of materials used, the manner in which materials are sourced, production processes, ingredients used, the observance of fair trade practices, and product packaging.
I am committed to playing a role (however small it may be) in changing how the business of fashion is done.
In Latin, “terra” is the word for planet earth. Shepherd is used to refer to the idea that we as human beings are the caretakers and keepers of our planet and the creatures that inhabit it.
The name “Terra Shepherd” encompasses our desire and shared responsibility to do what we can to protect our environment as well as our fellow human beings.
In the very early days of planning and dreaming about what the boutique would one day be, my husband suggested this name. It stuck in my heart and mind immediately. The boutique has been Terra Shepherd from that day.
We are not alone in this thing called life; our relationships with other people and the earth matter.
Small changes have the potential to create tremendous impact
Change doesn’t happen overnight, and it isn’t an all or nothing deal.
Accountability is key
Think, “what can I do to make the world a better place?” Tackle this before worrying about others’ actions. Like Gandhi said: be the change that you wish to see in the world.
We are never done learning
Perfection isn’t a reality. Mistakes are made. All we can do is continue to learn and grow.
